Near-Real-Time features three of Sam Wells’s collaborative, free improvisation projects that arose during the the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic struck, Wells, like with many other musicians, began to embrace telematic and networked performance practices to address the sudden absence of in-person musical interactions. The ability to connect, collaborate, and perform with other musicians in near real-time throughout the past year has been a sustaining artistic element of Wells’s pandemic reality. These performances represent a range of approaches to remote musical interaction, electronic audio processing, and free improvisation, embracing the fundamental latencies of networked music-making. Sam will be joined by Christopher Biggs, Scott L. Miller, Sarah Belle Reid, and Adam Vidiksis.
